Do fishes have “homes”? Or do they just swim around all the time?

Main Post: Do fishes have “homes”? Or do they just swim around all the time?

Top Comment: Some have a home that they spend their whole life trying to protect and maintain. Some have a home/den just when they are laying eggs and they get a new one every mating season. And most just swim around all the time and they drop eggs/babies wherever is convenient.

What kind of fish house do you like?

Main Post:

just got this little guy from a friend who was keeping him in a fishbowl and he seems to love his house. I’m moving him to my first tank (dirted/walstad method with filter) and thought the SpongeBob house would ruin the vibe. Do you think the house would be fine/silly? Any alternative housing suggestions/natural betta beds?

Top Comment: The betta honestly probably just likes it because it’s a place to hide. I gave one of mine a hallow piece of wood that acts like a cave, a floating betta log, and plenty of plants. Another one of my tanks uses dragon stone and I have them organized in a way that creates a cave and again plenty of plants, that tank has one of those under substrate caves as well. If you don’t mind the goofy aspect of the pineapple I say add it! Otherwise if you want more natural options, you can always try wood or rocks! A lot of people also like Terra-cotta pots.

Rescue betta fish looking for homes! (SF Bay Area, CA)

Main Post:

Hi all! I have a side hobby of rescuing bettas, and am now looking for homes for some of my recovered boys so I can open up space for more rescues!

I don't support the sale of animals in general, and especially hate the treatment of small animals in pet stores. Any of my fish who came from a pet store were given to me for free with manager permission.

I posted this to r/AquaSwap as well.

I have quite a few bettas who I'd like to eventually adopt out. I'll list them all, but some are not immediately available. Please contact me if you're interested in any of them and we can figure out a timeline!

I am located in the north SF Bay Area and can drive up to an hour or so for a good home for any of my boys.

Any of them can go to a five gallon tank or larger, with the exception of the king betta Bast who needs a ten gallon tank or larger. If you're potentially interested in a betta but have never kept one before, please check out r/bettafish or PM me for information on these active and curious little fish!

All of these guys are available for free, but I will accept trades of aquarium equipment or plants, or a donation if you'd like. Any trades or donations will go exclusively to rescuing more fish.

Immediately available:

  • Erwin before and after his rescue from PetSmart.
  • Bast before and after. Bast came relatively healthy from someone on Craigslist who had him in an unheated 3 gallon tank. He needs at least 10 gallons.
  • Greg before and after his rescue from Petco. Greg has been with me for a month and his fins have not improved despite pristine water, I expect the damage to his fins and the scrapes on his side are permanent. He's had a rough go of it to this point but is active, curious, and eats well.

Still recovering but ready soon:

  • Ozai before and after his rescue from a person keeping him with another male. Ozai recently discovered the filter intake and his fins are a bit ragged as a result. I'd like to give him more time to grow them back before going to a new home.
  • Rost after on top, before on bottom. He has some fin growth to do still, but will be ready for adoption very soon. Rost also came from Petco.
  • Sonic before on top, after on bottom. He still has some weight to put on but is otherwise healthy, active, and very feisty. Sonic is another Petco rescue!

Any good player homes that use Hearthfire's fish hatchery?

Main Post:

So, one thing I really liked in Hearthfire was the fish hatchery, which you could only get if you built Windstad Manor in Hjaalmarch. I'm wondering whether there are any player home mods that take advantage of the hatchery assets to have their own hatchery? Or at least some means of constantly replenishing fish for my alchemy stores?

Also looking for plantable garden plots, which seem fairly common in house mods ... Bonus points if it's got a grim, stoney aesthetic, and also if it's not located inside a major city. I'd also like to have a good amount of storage, and most/all of the usual amenities -- alchemy lab, enchanting table, kitchen, etc. Those aren't necessarily dealbreakers, though.

I looked over u/TeaMistress's wonderful list of player homes, but I couldn't find anything that specifically said it includes the hatchery.

I recently published my housemod with a fish hatchery http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/61688/? .I have no idea if it is what you are searching for though.

Do individual wild animals have permanent homes they stay in?

Main Post:

Like would a single snake have a specific hovel or hole to which they retire when done hunting/feeding/browsing, or do they just sleep "wherever"? Does a fish go to a specific crack in a rock to settle down when not out and about? Do most wild animals have a place they call "home", or do they just constantly roam?

Top Comment:

It needs to be a little more specific as to which animal. Because there's such a wide range of animal diversity, some of them will stay in certain habitats and even build their own houses, and some will migrate occasionally or constantly. With snakes, they can sleep in the same location for some time such as hibernation, but will more than likely relocate itself in the future depending on the age. Beavers will make their own houses, but won't stay in the same lodge forever. Fish pretty much always stay in the same habitat, whether it be areas of high kelp, open water, coral reefs, etc. But it won't usually make a 'home'. Again, all animals have different natures. Some will stay in the same homes, some never do. Personally, I can't recall any animals that stay in the same home permanently.
